We have new Dogs and Cats at our Kennels

If you have looked at our website you will see that a number of our cats and dogs have been with us for some time. However we do have several new arrivals but not yet been able to provide details. Some animals move very quickly so it is always best to ring our kennels on 01782 551515 if you want to give an animal a home - even if there do not appear to be suitable ones on our website. There will always be more than the pictures show.

Microchipping

Don't forget we are holding several microchipping events during the year. It is free, although we do ask for a donation to cover costs. Just bring your cat or dog to our venue.
Next one is at

Joint RSPCA and Police operation

Three men from Stoke have admitted hunting wildlife with their dogs at a Staffordshire beauty spot after they were caught with a fresh deer carcass in their van during a joint RSPCA and police operation. James William Harvey, James Jeffrey Morgan and Kyle Andrew Rodgers all appeared at Stafford Magistrates’ Court yesterday (6.6.13), when they admitted one charge each of breaching the Hunting Act by hunting a deer and rabbit with dogs on Cannock Chase.

The men were intercepted in the early hours of 24 November last year during Operation Mako, which was a joint crackdown on wildlife crime by the RSPCA and Staffordshire Police.

They were each fined £184 and ordered to each pay a £36 victim surcharge and £2,538 costs. Magistrates ordered that all of the equipment and the four dogs that were seized during last year’s joint operation must be forfeited by the men. Chief inspector Ian Briggs, from the RSPCA’s special operations unit, said: “These men were effectively caught red handed thanks to the proactive joint work of the RSPCA and Staffordshire Police.

“Operation Mako was launched to target those people who think they can get away with hunting wild animals with dogs, and it caught three men who thought they could do just that.

“Anyone thinking of following in these men’s footsteps should treat today’s court hearing as a stark warning.

“Once again, the joined up approach between the RSPCA and Staffordshire Police proved highly successful and we hope to work together again to protect the welfare of our countryside’s animal population.”

Superintendent Dave Holdway, Staffordshire Police’s force lead on rural crime, said: “We are very pleased with the early pleas. We hope this result sends a clear message that offences against wildlife will not be tolerated in Staffordshire and we will work closely with partners to take action against individuals involved in such activity.”

Harvey, 24, of Crestbrook Road, Morgan, 28, of Baker Crescent and Rodgers, 23, of New House Road, were all in a transit van which was stopped by police as part of stop-checks during the three-day operation. Operation Mako included a number of uniformed RSPCA inspectors as well as police wildlife crime officers and special constables.

Upon further investigation, police officers discovered three lurcher type dogs and a bull terrier type dog in the back of the van, along with the carcass of a deer. Other equipment in the van included a battery pack and two lamps.

The three men were arrested at the scene and the dogs and deer carcass seized. The RSPCA took the deer carcass to an independent vet to inspect a number of puncture wounds on the animal’s body, as well as large lacerations to its neck and abdomen.

The vet’s report indicated that the puncture wounds were consistent with dog bites which would have been inflicted before the deer had died. He also suggested the lacerations were likely to have been made by a knife and were consistent with an attempt to prepare the carcass for human consumption. This was supported by findings from a post-mortem carried out on the deer carcass at the University of Liverpool’s Department of Veterinary Pathology.

During interview, Rodgers initially claimed the trio had found the deer carcass by the side of the road and decided to put it in the van.

However, he yesterday admitted the one charge under the Hunting Act, along with his co-defendants Morgan and Harvey.

Great news from the kennels ; Two dogs, Charlie and Dinky have found new homes. Dinky was brought in and reserved the same day by some people who were looking around the kennels, lucky Dinky! Two cats, Bella and Jasmin, have also found new homes!!! This will free up some space at the kennels which is already badly needed by the Inspectors who have animals waiting to come in to our care.
Also Diesel, our long term resident and elderly Jack Russell has now found a new home so he can spend his retirement happily with two companion Jack Russell's

Safe Haven

We have now re launched the Branch Safe Haven Scheme

By sponsoring one of our designated animal spaces for £3, £5, or more if you choose to, per month you can help give animals a second chance.

We have designated dog and cat spaces available for sponsorship. This will provide a safe environment for abused, abandoned or mistreated animals. With Safe Haven you won’t be helping just one animal, you’ll be sponsoring the lives of all who pass through our kennels every year.

Your sponsorship will go towards the animals care, rehabilitation and medical treatment.  While they are in our care we give them a safe haven - we will make sure that they feel loved and secure by caring for their physical needs as well as giving them  regular exercise and company.

Just pick either a dog kennel or cat pen

A sponsorship form can be downloaded from http://www.rspcanorthstaffs.co.uk/safehaven.html

Dimmingsdale Walk

Sadly we have had to postpone Sundays walk because of the weather. There is a lot of snow and the going would be heavy. Having gone for a walk today I encountered drifts of up to six feet though most were between knee and waist deep so it would not be much fun.
The new date is Sunday, 12th May so hopefullyu will see you then.

Cat from Stoke found in Cardiff

Bobby, a tabby cat, was found as a stray in Cardiff last summer. He was taken in by a member of the public who looked after him. However he developed some polyps on his ears so was taken to the Vet who discovered a microchip and that he had been reported lost 4 years ago in Stoke. Although there were contact numbers they are no longer in operation. The full story can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-21277057
This shows the value of microchipping but also to keep the register up to date. Although this was not an RSPCA cat, by having your pet microchipped and any change in contact details kept up to date, a pet can be reunited with its owner, even after 4 years.
Fortunately Bobby is well looked after and although his new owner will return him, he is at least assured of a good home if the original owner is not found..

A Distressing Case

Sadly another case of animal cruelty in North Staffordshire has hit the headlines when a dog was suffocated with a plastic bag after being starved. The full story can be found at http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/Blythe-Bridge-mum-jailed-suffocating-family-dog/story-18011125-detail/story.html?ito=email_newsletter_thisisstaffordshire

In December alone the Inspectors received 491 calls of which about a quarter involved cats and dogs, and another quarter, horses.

Poisoning of cats

Whether it was a deliberate act or not, the article in the sentinel http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/Family-left-devastated-pet-cat-killed-poison/story-17971134-detail/story.html?ito=email_newsletter_thisisstaffordshire   reveals the sad truth that there are people about who will deliberately put out anti freeze to poison cats. Cats like its taste but the amount of suffering it causes them is incalculable and as the article tells us, it also devastates families and can be traumatic for children to witness. If anyone knows of someone who will put out anitfreeze delibertaley to harm animals please either inform the Police or the RSPCA.
Thank you

Youth Jailed for shooting ducks.

On 23 October we posted a story about ducks being shot at on the Caldon Canal. Well the culprit has been found and prosecuted and received an 8 week sentence as a result. The full story can be found in the Sentinel, 11 January or by viewing
 http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/Ball-Green-yob-Michael-Prince-jailed-shooting-18/story-17827023-detail/story.html?ito=email_newsletter_thisisstaffordshire

Although the article refers to the canal as Trent and Mersey, Milton is on the Caldon Canal so refers to the above incident I suspect.

People are urged to come forward and report anyone to the Police or the RSPCA ( 0300 1234 999) if they suspect of shooting at animals with air guns or rifles.

Happy Tale for New Year

We adopted Jet back in January, she is called Betty now. When we first got her she was very timid, and it took a while for her to settle in; you wouldn’t think she is the same dog now. She is very happy and settled, friends comment on how well she is doing.
I also take her training and she is such a good girl, (she won 3rd prize in obedience and 1st prize for prettiest girl dog). She is very loving and loves her cuddles and walks. She has a set of dog friends who she loves running around with and playing where I take her walking in the morning and  at weekends.
She is getting better at going in the car  -  she seems to have a phobia but is getting better, and we have taken her to Lyme Park a couple of times. We can’t imagine life without her now as we love her so much. She is good company for Jim who works from home and she is there at the window when she knows I am due home from work and its lovely to come home to her.
